Darren Engels has over 18 years of business, financial and investment experience, of which 15 years were at FirstEnergy, a premier boutique investment bank focused on energy.
Mr. Engels is enthusiastic for entrepreneurship and helping good people and companies achieve success. He is currently a business and financial advisor for several start-up and entrepreneurial companies that are focused in various industries and technologies.
Previously, Darren was a Director, Institutional Research at GMP FirstEnergy.
Engels holds a Bachelor of Management from the University of Lethbridge and a Masters of Professional Accounting from the University of Saskatchewan, as well as CPA CA and CFA designations.
Paul K. O'Donoghue
Paul brings over 25 years of corporate finance experience with a focus on corporate development, financings (debt/equity), acquisitions/divestitures, investor relations, risk management, marketing and legal affairs. Paul has participated (led or co-led) in over $2 billion in capital funding (debt/equity) and has managed numerous multi-million dollar M&A transactions. He has also acted on behalf of several private ventures in both management and director roles.
Paul is an independent businessman. Currently, he is the Executive Chairman of Showpass and Managing Director of Canadian Discovery. Paul has an active role in both companies, with overall responsibility for corporate and strategic development.
Paul holds an MBA in Finance from the Rotman School of Business, University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Oklahoma University.
Alex Munro started his career in industrial technology analysis and international structured finance. Mr. Munro moved into public venture capital in London, UK before returning to Canada to found Cenovus Energy Ventures and later Fronterra Ventures, both North American natural resources technology investment funds. He later invested with Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures in Houston before taking on the role of Director, Capital Advisory with MaRS-DD, the world's largest innovation hub based in Toronto. He is a standing advisor to a variety of small- and medium-sized technology enterprises predominantly in fintech, cybersecurity, and data-driven decision-making.
Munro holds an MBA from Berkeley and Rotterdam and is presently pursuing a PhD in financial markets focussing on vega-neutral options trading strategies.
Céline Gerson brings over 20 years of experience in the energy industry with both entrepreneurial companies and Fortune 500 organizations. In 2018, she was appointed as President of Schlumberger Canada Ltd.
She serves on numerous boards of non-profit organizations, such as the Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada (PTAC) and the Canadian Society for Unconventional Resources (CSUR). She is a member of the Schulich Industry Advisory Council at the University of Calgary and the Director of Marketing for the 69th Canadian Energy Executive Association. She is actively involved with promoting and mentoring women and is an Advisory Board member of Schlumberger’s ConnectWomen Network.
She regularly speaks at conferences around the world and is passionate about mentoring startup companies with cutting edge technologies for the energy industry.
Gerson holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the European University in Brussels; a Juris Doctor from the University of Houston, is a Harvard Business School Alumni and is licensed to practice law in Texas.
Ed Ma is an experienced senior legal counsel, having spent the majority of his career as in-house counsel serving high growth, high profile private and public companies of all sizes from start-ups to multi-national corporations.
Mr. Ma is an accomplished negotiator with a track record of success and has concluded numerous international transactions. He attributes his success to having a business mind and being a good communicator. His main practice areas include energy law, corporate commercial law, technology law and aboriginal law. He is passionate about technology and environmental stewardship. He is a native Calgarian committed to his community. Since 2012, Mr. Ma has served as a Director on the board of ProBono Law Alberta.
Ma holds a Law Degree from the University of Windsor, Executive Leadership from Queen’s University and Advanced Negotiation from Harvard Law School.
“Dr. Bob” Schulz is a Professor and Academic Director for the Energy and Professional Land Management concentration with the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary. The media often seeks his perspective on energy issues. Over the past 46 years, he has received 25 outstanding teaching and service awards, including Top 10 Teaching Professor among 39,000 Canadian Professors in all disciplines. He was the first recipient of the Order of the University of Calgary.
Dr. Bob has been an angel investor, director, and advisor for more than 30 Public and Private companies, many of those founded by former students.As a coach, Bob’s students have won more than 100 national and global competitions. He is well known as a “super connector” and is a board director of the Global Innovation Management Institute.
Schultz holds four degrees, including BSc Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and PhD in Business from Ohio State.
